Warning Signs Your Home May Have a Subterranean Termite Problem

Subterranean termites are active long before most homeowners realize there is a problem. Because colonies develop underground and work from the inside out, visible damage often surfaces well after an infestation has taken hold. Knowing what to look for early is the most reliable way to protect your property before structural damage becomes a serious concern.

Common signs of subterranean termite activity in Pennsylvania homes include:

  • Mud tubes running along foundation walls, crawl spaces, or exposed framing
  • Soft or hollow-sounding wood when tapped on baseboards, door frames, or structural beams
  • Discarded wings near windowsills or entry points following spring swarms
  • Blistering or bubbling paint on walls or wood surfaces that mimics water damage
  • Tight-fitting doors or windows caused by moisture-related warping from termite activity
  • Frass or faint tunneling visible in exposed wood members

What makes subterranean termites particularly damaging to well-maintained homes is how methodically they operate. By the time any of these signs become visible, a colony may already number in the hundreds of thousands. A thorough inspection by a licensed professional is the only way to determine the true scope of activity and what areas of your structure may be at risk.

How the Sentricon Termite Treatment System Protects Your Home

Termites cause billions of dollars in structural damage every year, and most of that damage happens before homeowners ever notice a problem. The Sentricon System changes that dynamic. Rather than reacting to an active infestation, Sentricon works continuously around your property to monitor, intercept, and eliminate termite colonies before they reach your home. It is the most thoroughly researched termite control product available, backed by more than 60 scientific studies, and it is the only termite baiting system to earn the EPA's Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award.

Here is how it works. A certified Sentricon Specialist installs bait stations in a protective ring around your property. Termites find the bait on their own and are drawn to it far more than to wood. They carry it back to the colony, share it with other termites including the queen, and the entire colony is eliminated. A termite inspection confirms current conditions and guides proper station placement for maximum coverage.

D-Bug Pest Control installs and monitors the Sentricon System with these homeowner benefits in mind:

  • Total colony elimination, including the queen, not just surface-level termite activity
  • Continuous monitoring that stays active between scheduled visits
  • Minimally disruptive installation with no trenching or drilling into your foundation
  • No restrictions around water sources or wells, making it safe for virtually any property
  • Visible evidence of protection and notification of any future termite activity
  • Environmentally responsible chemistry with no soil saturation or runoff concerns

If you have concerns about termite activity or simply want to get ahead of potential damage, our team of certified exterminators is standing by to walk you through your options and answer any questions about our termite treatment approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have my home inspected regularly for termites?

Yes, regular inspections are crucial, especially if you live in an area with a high risk of termite activity. Annual inspections can help identify potential problems early and prevent extensive damage. Termite problems are often hidden from view, so professional inspections are the best way to spot an issue before it becomes severe.

How can I prevent termites from entering my home?

Here are a few preventive measures:

  • Keep wood away from your foundation—don’t store firewood, mulch, or wood debris close to your house.
  • Seal cracks and gaps in your foundation and around windows, doors, and pipes.
  • Repair leaks promptly to reduce moisture in areas like basements and crawl spaces.
  • Consider a termite barrier or treatment for additional protection, especially if you live in an area prone to termites.

How do termites enter my home?

Termites enter your home through small cracks or gaps in your foundation, walls, or around pipes and electrical lines. They can also find their way in through wood-to-ground contact or overexposed, untreated areas like wooden decks, fences, or firewood piles.

How long does it take termites to cause damage?

Termites can begin to cause significant damage surprisingly quickly. The exact timeframe depends on factors like the size of the infestation and the type of termites, but in general:

  • Subterranean termites (the most common type) can cause visible damage in as little as 3 to 6 months in a heavily infested area. These termites typically start in hidden areas and work their way into the wood of your home, eating it from the inside out.

In the early stages of an infestation, termites often cause little visible damage. The wood they eat from the inside may look normal on the outside, making it easy for homeowners to miss the signs. However, as they continue to feed, structural damage can escalate quickly, compromising the integrity of your home’s framework. It’s crucial to address any signs of termites early, as even a small infestation can lead to significant damage if left untreated. Regular inspections can help catch potential problems before they become costly.

What happens if I don’t treat a termite infestation?

If left untreated, termites can cause significant structural damage that could lead to expensive repairs. Over time, termites can weaken beams, flooring, and even the foundation of your home. Early intervention is key to preventing costly damage.

How can I tell if it’s a carpenter ant or a termite?

  • Body Shape: Termites have broad, straight bodies with no defined waist; carpenter ants have a narrow, pinched waist.
  • Antennae: Termites have straight antennae; carpenter ants have bent (“elbowed”) antennae.
  • Color: Termites are pale or light-colored; carpenter ants are dark brown, black, or reddish.
  • Wood Damage: Termites eat wood, leaving rough, mud-lined tunnels and mud tubes; carpenter ants tunnel into wood, leaving smooth galleries and piles of sawdust.
  • Wings: Termite wings are equal in length and longer than their bodies; carpenter ants have larger front wings and smaller hind wings.

Still unsure? Both Carpenter ants and Termites are dangerous wood-destroying insects!

Nate was on time and seemed very knowledgeable about termites which a home inspector found evidence of. Turns out, the infestation was neither recent nor active and the damage was minimal. Nate dug some inspection holes in the soil and found no bugs. Nates inspection was on free and he gave us some no obligation options for treatment for any potential future decepticons. Jokes aside, bugs are horrible for your largest investment. We recommend these guys to keep the bugs at bay.
